Dipor Bill is one of the most popular lake in Assam. It is the largest lake in the Kamrup Metro district, and it is located in the southwest of Guwahati city in Assam. Dipor Bill is also spelled Deepor Beel and is a permanent freshwater lake in the Brahmaputra Valley. The area of Deepor Beel, 4.14 square km, was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary by the Forest Department of the Assam Government in the year 1989. Dipor Bill is listed as a wetland under the Ramsar Convention, which designated it as a lake on the basis of biological and environmental importance in Assam on 19th August 2002.

The best time to visit the lake is April to July, when the bill is full of water. There is no entry fee to visit Dipor Bill. Visiting time is 9 am to 5 pm. There is a watchtower to see all the bill clear view, constructed by the Forest Department of Assam. Many country boats are available to explore the bill. The cost of boat riding is Rs.100 to Rs.300. The main source of water is the Basistha and Kalmini River. The bill drains into the Brahmaputra River, 5 km to the north, through the Khonajan channel. You will find that a park is made by the Assam Government Tourism Department. The beauty of Dipor Bill is amazing in the summer season.

It is the largest bill in the Brahmaputra Valley of lower Assam. The bill expands up to 30 sq. km in the summer season and decreases to about 10 sq. km in the winter season. The bill has a total area of 41 sq. km. The wildlife sanctuary measures 4.14 sq. km. as an eco-sensitive zone in the lake. About 219 species of birds have been recorded in this wildlife sanctuary, including over 70 species of migratory birds. In a single day, the highest number of birds recorded was over 19000 in Deepor Beel.

In Dipor Bill you will see a huge number of residential birds. The bill also provides shelter to a large number of migrating birds, like Siberian kingfishers, fishing eagles, a plethora of ducks, lesser whistling teal, shoveler, garganey, pintail, bronze-winged gadwall, open-bill stork, black-winged stilt, grey-headed lapwing, spot-billed duck, and high concentrations of pheasant-tailed jacanas, etc. The birds come to the place during winter.

Best time to visit Dipor bill 

The best time to visit Dipor Bill is in summer, i.e., April to July, when the lake is full of water. If you want to see the full of water lake view, you must visit in the rainy season. If you want to see various birds in the lake, you must visit from October to March. Many birds come here from different parts of the country at this time. Also, many migratory birds are seen every year.

How to reach Deepor Beel from Guwahati

Deepor Beel is located on National Highway 37NH, on the Jalukbari-Khanapara bypass, around 18 km from Guwahati railway station. You will find passenger buses to visit the tourist spot in Assam.  You can also hire a private taxi or book a cab to visit Dipor Bill.

Deepor Beel is stated to be a derivative of the Sanskrit word “Dipa,” which means “elephant,” and the word “beel,” which means “wetland” or “large aquatic body” in the Assamese language, inhabited by elephants. It was also claimed that Beel was an important dockyard of Tai-Ahom as well as Ahom-Mughal conflicts.
